In Oliena, Sardinia, the local legends seem to have disappeared from people’s memories. But the traditional songs, olive trees and fires of San Giovanni evoke them powerfully. With the help of the villagers, director Myriam Raccah decides to bring them back to life. Accompanied by four young men with an air of Pasolini about them – the protagonist, the narrator, the companion and the antagonist – and with painter Pina along for the ride, Myriam breathes life into a whole ancestral universe populated by legendary creatures. Underscoring the film is the latent tension of the fire alert that hangs over the region, threatening to devour these landscapes and the stories they contain. The filmmaker narrates these adventures in voice-over, between the beauty of tradition and ordinary life, memory and oblivion, flames and storm. Myriam Raccah has created a marvellous summer fresco showcasing the magic of storytelling and cinema.
