While contemplating having a child, Miranda Stern starts to open boxes containing the personal effects of her mother, whom she never knew. Through a moving introspective journey into the past and the future, the filmmaker creates a cinematic work around maternity, loss and addiction, focused on life and healing.

As she contemplates having a child, Miranda Stern decides to revisit the contents of some boxes. Photos, objects, letters, films... These contents are the personal effects of her mother, Sara, whom she never knew. Borrowing from the ancient Japanese art of kintsugi, she picks up the pieces and puts them back together, reconstructing a past that gives meaning to her own. It is a process which echoes the cinematographic act of assembling and composing films to create meaning and give life. We follow the director on her intimate quest, as she explores how we construct our sense of self in the face of loss. In particular, she re-evaluates her heroin addiction, making a link with breast milk, which stimulates the same areas of the brain in an infant. Milk is a heartfelt film about the process of reconnecting with her mother and with those around her. Through a moving introspective journey into the past and the future, the director creates a cinematic work about motherhood, loss and addiction, focusing on life and healing.
