Obsessed by the end of the world, Ernesto has spent years designing an island where humans will go to live should everything disappear. Following a particular method of research, the Cuban scientist shows us his prototype for a perfect universe, the “Metatron”, a sort of strange figure that articulates the circle and the cube, these perfect forms that exist in nature and should save us during a potential doomsday scenario.
Alejandro Alonso builds the portrait of a character who swings between the genius and the absurd of a burlesque comedy. He films him alone, in his home, surrounded by mathematical formulae and geometrical shapes drawn on scraps of paper. By capturing Ernesto’s hands at work, his sketches of a perfect world or his crazy speech, the film constructs a fragmented universe that echoes Ernesto’s scientific method. Cinema is presented here as a dialectic game between the director and the character, a game in which the camera becomes, for Ernesto, one of the pieces of his impossible plan: that which will represent the idea of his perfect universe.
