In an isolated corner of Japan, a community of fisherwomen harmoniously preserve their traditions. Every day, the Ama-San free dive into the sea in search of seaweed, crustaceans and shellfish that they use for food or trade. They are between 50 and 85 years old... How can one evoke a disappearing activity if not by transfiguring it? Magical sequences, full of suspended emotion, season the film: the dives and their ritual preparation, the family routine, the small community’s celebrations, karaoke... At times, we have the impression that time is standing still and we are watching an Ozu film. The fishing sequences are tinged with dreams, whereas the scenes describing family life and that of the community are enshrouded in warm light. Something along the lines of a perfect harmony reigns in this feature- length film that mixes three generations, a world that seems free of all forms of conflict and a possible representation of happiness, the natural finality of human life. Characters out of another time, and a film of dazzling modernity.
