A summer night, on the water’s edge, hundreds of people, men and women, have gathered. It’s Paris, on the banks of the Ourcq Canal, La Villette basin and it has been like this for many years. People picnic, play boules, have a drink with friends in an intoxicating stream of words, in this atmosphere so charac- teristic of summer evenings in the city of lovers.
Loves me, Loves me not offers us the possibility of roaming the banks, going with the flow, circulating from one group to another, at the whim of discussions and to meet strangers. Whether the conversations are serious or frivolous, a single subject attracts the attention of the director: love, amongst little every day trivia and philosophical considerations. A dozen couples, lovers or friends, wax poetically very spontaneously, without worrying about the camera. Here we try to understand something of the feel- ing of love, to explain the emotion, the desire, to share an intimate relationship, to defend love as an empirical experience. We talk rationally of the most irrational of subjects...
