Sheltered

At the largest shelter in the Netherlands, staff and volunteers work together to welcome animals in need. The mental states of animals and humans are profoundly connected, and the aggressive dogs or nervous cats are often hiding a painful past. The centre supports and cares for its lodgers both physically and psychologically; dogs take part in physiotherapy sessions on a moving walkway submerged in water, while behavioural therapists follow them customized classrooms. Through sometimes surprising practices and activities, told with gentle irony, Sheltered highlights the complexity of the relationships between humans and animals. This observational documentary filmed in Amsterdam tenderly recounts the commitment of a passionate team who is trying its hardest to find the best partners for each animal and each person.
