Two twin sisters, a master and his dog, lovers who look like each other...all doubles are possible in the simultaneously poetic and hyper-realistic universe of Cláudia Varejão. Here, love comes in all shapes and sizes, building a choreography of visual resemblances, while also questioning what makes a couple in the contemporary world.
Amor fati could be translated from the Latin as love for one’s destiny, but also as the love that is destined for us. Here we could imagine the Platonist idea that describes lovers as the separate parts of a single unity, who will spend their lives seeking each other out to find eternity. Namely, doubles. The new film by Cláudia Varejão (Ama-san, VdR 2016) takes us into a gentle visual movement in which we gradually discover pairs of all types: two twin sisters, a master and his dog, lovers whose resemblance is troubling... all doubles are possible in the simultaneously poetic and hyper-realistic universe of the Portuguese artist. Thanks to the finesse of her gaze, we explore the bodies that parade across the screen, we discover the pores of their skin, their wrinkles, and we imagine their kisses. Cláudia Varejão pierces intimacy to produce a series of striking portraits. Here, love comes in all shapes and sizes, building a choreography of visual resemblances, while also questioning the meaning of the couple in today’s world.
