A first-person study that tackles a major challenge: understanding the meaning of marriage and penetrating the secret of long-lasting love! The director seeks answers to the questions building up in her mind as she is about to take the plunge with her companion. Do you really have to get married to formalise a relationship? Would marriage not imprison feelings? To attempt to explore these questions, Karin Slater meets four couples in South Africa, the United States, the Netherlands and India, who have all been married for over 50 years. With humour and tenderness, we discover different ways of having a relationship, all with their fair share of ups and downs, and having gone through sometimes difficult ordeals. With an interested eye and an intelligent alternation of testimonies, the film shows us that love is never guaranteed and that one’s belief in the relationship allows above all to explore life, the other and oneself. By trusting each other and getting rid of prejudices, the bride and groom will perhaps have a long life together...
