Three minutes that pump like a heart beating to the rhythm of a drum: with outstanding simplicity and effectiveness, this short film by Ahmed Hermassi shows a wall that has become a canvas for many works of graffiti that follow, erase or are superimposed on one another, thus conveying the complexity and pace of the country’s social evolution.
Three minutes that pump like a heart beating to the rhythm of a drum: with outstanding simplicity and effectiveness, this short film by Ahmed Hermassi shows a wall that has become a canvas for many works of graffiti that follow, erase or are superimposed on one another, thus conveying the complexity and pace of Tunisia’s social evolution. Anything goes here: support for rival football clubs, complaints about rubbish left on the street, curses levelled at Ben Ali, the Jasmine Revolution, the place of religion... The wall becomes a diary, shared and made public by the citizens. It bears witness to a freedom of expression that has been newly reconquered, following many years of imposed silence. A patchwork of moods ranging from joy to rage, stopping off at hope, despair and irony. Every thought – even the most paradoxical –can be found here, giving shape to a veritable graphic cacophony, an undeniable reflection of a society in transition, its eyes fixed on the future.
