La Goulette, north of Tunis, is known for being the capital’s port district, yet is also, and perhaps above all, a unique place where people of different origins and religions have long coexisted. In this cosmopolitan microcosm, mosques were built next to synagogues and churches. The story of La Goulette is part of the life of Angela: a Tunisian of Sicilian origin granted French citizenship, she has lived here since birth in 1936. Through the memories of this woman, we discover the incredible history of the place and the many changes that are transforming it. Angela is an invaluable witness and thus succeeds, with sensitivity and modesty, in writing a part of history and in constructing the memory of a family, a place and an era. Even if the buildings have been demolished and the inhabitants have left, Angela highlights an ancient world, which is undergoing rapid change and is in the process of disappearing.
