The filmmaker, a recent film school graduate, falls into a deep depression after realising the contradictions between art and life. She thinks about suicide. But death is never a remedy for doubt. So she grabs the first opportunity gives her to get out of this impasse. During a stay in Bucharest, she gets to know the Romanian painter Matei Serban Sandu, who, though suffering from an incurable disease, calmly continues to paint while awaiting the end of his life. At their first encounter, he tells her: “Human beings don’t choose their time of death.” From then on, she follows him in everyday life, adopts his way of thinking and grows up at his side. The dialogues between the artist, who is working on large paintings, and the young woman with her camera provide enough energy to continue living. Entre ciel et terre is not only a very personal analysis of death as the path to consciousness of the gift of life, but also the story of an irresistible transmission of wisdom and hope.
