As a child, Maka Gogaladze was forced to take piano lessons that drove her to tears. When she challenges her mother about it, the latter retorts that children must be taught discipline. Drawing on her personal experience, the filmmaker observes with caustic humour the mechanisms by which an entire society – in this case Georgian – is brought into line through education.

As a child, Maka Gogaladze was forced to take piano lessons. For seven years, twice a week, she would burst into tears at the thought of going. Now, as an adult, she challenges her mother, who replies by insisting that children must learn discipline. Drawing on her personal experience, the filmmaker observes the mechanisms by which an entire society – in this case Georgian – is brought into line, by capturing instances similar to those of her childhood: a piano lesson given by a teacher who uses words to browbeat, a ballet class where bodies are made to bend, a class learning poems to the glory of the motherland and those who defend it – in other words, how power circulates and passes through us. Through a composition of the frame that is as strict as the education it depicts, filmmaker Maka Gogaladze highlights the rigidity of constraint, while subverting it through caustic humour. An amusing, salutary filmic game that allows the director to break away from the influence of a power which had discreetly insinuated itself between her and her mother.
