In Inviolata, a farming hamlet in the region of Lazio cut off from the outside world and modern life, live fifty or so farmers, working as serfs – unbeknownst to anyone – under the Marchioness Alfonsina da Luna. Her exertion of slavery is supported by a dishonest and zealous accountant, and the small close-knit community is struggling to reimburse their ever-increasing debts to their boss. As a naïve young peasant full of good will, Lazzaro is exploited by his peers. One day, he becomes friends with Tancredi, the son of the Marchioness, who has just arrived from the city. In this encounter – of which he will once more emerge a fool – Lazzaro will journey through life and time. Alice Rohrwacher’s film is resurrected at the same time as its protagonist, in a second movement during which the community of slaves finds itself free in the pitiless world of today. Lazzaro felice (Best Screenplay, Cannes Film Festival, 2018) deploys all of the power and symbolism of the great myths in a magical drama depicting the odyssey of a celestial being.
