Karen Dalton was a major and yet little known figure in American folk music. Crowned with a brief success on New York’s Greenwich Village scene, she was then acclaimed by musicians like Bob Dylan. But Dalton was not made for the conventions of the industry: a prodigious musician, she was first and foremost a free woman who decided to go and live on the fringes. She experienced profound sadness, heartache, solitude, and her broken voice reflects this pain in heart-breaking music.
Between biopic and diary, the artist Emmanuelle Antille undertakes a long voyage across the United States on the traces of this cursed star, in order to better question her own creative process. Where is the boundary that separates creation from private life? For the director who is exploring the limit between the real and the dreamlike, Dalton here takes on the outlines of a ghostly apparition. A Bright Light - Karen and the Process is perhaps more a story of dead ringers than a film on the life of another. Here, film becomes a possible dialogue with oneself. A feeble light. A sparkle.
