In 2016, China gifts Algiers an opera house. Karim Moussaoui, bewildered by such costly facilities while his country remains so far removed from this art form, reflects on the kind of opera to which Algerian musical culture might give rise. With a film crew, he sets off to Timimoun in search of the mysterious cave-singing “divas”.
