Au Revoir Siam charts the mental journey of a Thai political refugee in France. Intertwining traditional Thai rituals with the reality faced by political refugees, filmmaker Domenico Singha Pedroli explores the concept of borders, examining time, space and identity. A poetic and political narrative that delves into the troubled past of the Kingdom of Siam.

Au Revoir Siam follows the story of Jaran Ditapichai, a Thai political refugee living in France. Over the course of a mental journey back to his native country and the city in which he grew up, a web of sensations and images is woven through innumerable small gestures and exchanges that awaken the troubled past of the Kingdom of Siam. Presented entirely in split screen, Au Revoir Siam portrays the clash between Thailand’s deeply entrenched rituals and traditions and the present-day reality of these political refugees. The concept of the border, as both a physical and a symbolic barrier, lies at the heart of the narrative device employed by Domenico Singha Pedroli, which examines the multiple ways in which his country has been demarcated. The filmmaker dissects the relationship between time and space, our relationship to history, and the place that identity can occupy within it. Au Revoir Siam is a poetic and political exploration of this shifting border, both natural and human-made. Domenico Singha Pedroli, who has Swiss, Italian and Thai heritage, was born and raised in Lugano.
