Leaving for Myanmar in 2020, the filmmaker could not have anticipated the upheaval the country was on the verge of experiencing. Through the darkness of the Covid-19 epidemic and the violent coup d’état orchestrated by the military junta, a light continues to shine: that of 17-year-old Zu Zu and her steadfast dream of a better future for her loved ones. A four-handed diary and chronicle of a friendship.

In August 2020, filmmaker Juliette Klinke sets off for Myanmar, a country she knows virtually nothing about, to join her partner. As Covid-19 ravages the country and the rest of the world, she finds refuge with the family of Zu Zu, a 17-year-old girl who is waiting for the universities to reopen so that she can fulfil her dream of becoming a police officer and serving her community. Using rudimentary resources, the director captures the birth of this unlikely friendship with tenderness and humility. While the health crisis is in full swing, confining the population within four walls, a violent coup d'état orchestrated by the military junta brings a new scourge. What has, until now, appeared to be a personal filmic record of a human connection now takes on a whole new dimension... Zu Zu's words and gestures, immortalised as they are by the filmmaker's affectionate gaze, bear witness to the fears and hopes of a clear-sighted generation determined to challenge existing certainties.
