During the 2020 lockdown, Lucrecia Martel returned to her home region of Salta in Northern Argentina. Famous for its conservative views, this sublime mountainous region also provides the backdrop for her first three fiction feature films. There, she follows tango singer Julieta Laso as she joins a community of feminist and dissident artists gathered in the heart of the forest. Through nights of wild parties, passionate discussions and artistic performances, Lucrecia Martel blends the songs of these women with the organic sounds of nature, highlighting the sublime symbiosis of life. From this timeless tale – which seems untouched by the chaos of the pandemic – emanates a colourful and refreshing look at sisterhood. The women’s incantations invoke the spirits and souls of the region, offering a musical and poetic antidote to the anxieties of an upended world. Lucrecia Martel’s latest documentary foray is the precursor to a new feature documentary film, earmarked for 2023.
