Akhalkalaki is a town in Georgia (former Soviet Union). It is where Harutyun Khachatryan was born in 1955 and where a strong Armenian community spoke mainly in its mother tongue. Like in a short story by Gogol, the film is a collection of vignettes and sketches that depict life in Akhalkalaki in a way that is both burlesque and tragic. The White Town is one of Khachatryan’s most touching films.
