Conquering fear by manufacturing scares: that is what the teens in Hoax_Canular do with their webcams, unleashing rumours of the end of the world. The fourth chapter of Dominic Gagnon’s work with amateur online videos is a profound reflection on how young people are appropriating the angst being stoked by the media. We never know where parody ends and sincerity begins.

A film built on lies, assuming the end of the world on 21 December 2012 as the greatest of them. Conquering fear by manufacturing scares: that’s what the teens in Hoax_Canular do with their webcams, unleashing rumors of the end of the world. The fourth chapter of Dominic Gagnon’s work with amateur online videos is a profound reflection on how young people are appropriating the angst being stoked by the media. While in his previous films we see the result of a meticulous research over time, the material of Hoax_Canular comes mostly from 70 hours of videos recorded simultaneously on a single night - the night before “the great apocalypse”. We are exposed to an extremely wide range of reactions and we never know where parody ends and sincerity begins, but the film undeniably achieves a vibrant possible portrait of the digital natives’ generation, with a masterful “web direct cinema” approach.
