Gilberto Gil is not just a great musician. He is also a politician who, in an increasingly globalised world, has dedicated much of his life to promoting cultural diversity. The film recounts his trip to the world’s southern hemisphere where he flirts with the music of the native people of Australia, South Africa and Amazonia. An adventure brimming with energy, sounds and wisdom.

Gilberto Gil is more than just a musician. He is also a politician who has dedicated much of his life to promoting cultural diversity in an increasingly globalised world. This commitment forms the focal point of Viramundo – un voyage musical avec Gilberto Gil, an account of a trip to the southern hemisphere that takes Gil from Bahia to the lands of the Aboriginal peoples of Australia and from the urban neighbourhoods of South Africa to the Amazon region. This journey, which seeks to encourage exchanges through new media and bring together different musical creative forces, is accompanied by the precise and sensitive gaze of the filmmaker, who knows how to capture music and, above all, the profound sense of an encounter. “The journey leads Gilberto Gil to places where racial issues remain omnipresent, problematic and painful. The film focuses on his reaction to these divisions and prejudices. Music is also of course a central feature of the film. Even if Gil has been involved politically, he knows intimately that music and poetry are the most efficient tools for getting to the heart of things.” (PYB)
