The dockers of Ma Yan Chan, a district of Mandalay (Myanmar), have always lived and worked in the off-white mist of the dusty banks of the Irrawaddy River. From morning until evening, the cargo docks, the corner shops and crooked cabins that act as restaurants for the workers are always busy and teeming with life. But in a country undergoing economic, and thus political and social change, they are going to have to leave behind their traditional dwellings for newly constructed buildings. How are they going to be able to move in there when their lives until now were organised around their homes?
Ma Yan Chan - Waves of Transition
is the final graduation film for the Master in Film Studies at ECAL Lausanne University of Art and Design / HEAD Geneva University of Art and Design by Jonas Scheu, whom we presented last year with Cooling Waters, a film that questioned the same relationships between physical space and social space. It also revealed the way in which buildings, if we take the time to observe them, tell us something about the life that unfolds both within and outside them, in the past and in the future.
