In a retirement home whose daily life is punctuated with trivia, the petulant Josebe, age 88, dwells on childhood memories. She looks back with nostalgia on many moments, from slow dances in her beloved town of Errenteria (near San Sebastian) to meeting her nationalist husband. Then sometimes she suddenly expresses herself in Basque and notes, with a certain perplexity, that her interlocutors do not seem to understand her. And when she evokes her parents or an imminent return to their home, the nurses and her daughter gently and firmly reason with her. Lost in the mists of time, she now lives in Chile and is striving to resist, with touching pride, the fragility of the body and a memory that is fading. A confinement that is as internal as it is painful is sketched out through narrow and precise framing. The result of CPH:LAB and a collaboration between two filmmakers, I'm not from Here draws the poignant portrait of a Spanish generation that emigrated to Chile and is about to disappear.
