Does “filming music” mean making a film “on” music? In current parlance, even within the industry, you make a film on a topic. On an artist, an event, a story past or present, even on human rights, the emancipation of Muslim women or the world of finance. It is true that a large number of films are on a topic, failing to penetrate far beneath the surface of people and phenomena. This superficiality is a common defect in filmmaking.
In a teaching institution such as the Cinema Department / Cinéma du Réel of the HEAD in Geneva, we need to lay the foundations from which a point of view can be developed – an essential pre-condition for encountering Otherness. So the first condition we laid down for the films in this “Filmer la musique” workshop was that they must bear witness to a relationship with, around, in and among different forms of music.
With Nicolas Humbert, a Swiss and German filmmaker, who has a great talent for approaching and investigating the areas of interest to him (think of the legendary Step Across the Border, the main character of which is a musician, Fred Frith; and Middle of the Moment); and Michel Favre, a filmmaker teaching at the Cinema Department (his latest film, Si près si loin, has been selected for VdR 2012), the students, working quite independently, were induced to take an interest in music and to create some inspired short stories. Here are the results:
