Roko, once a socialist MP during the Bosnian War, is now an old man living on an island with his wife, Zina. When the war began, he felt it was his duty to stay in Mostar with his family, even as the city came under attack. Nationalists of his own people soon exiled them, accusing him of treason and seizing his home, which he recovered seven years after the war, but never returned to.
His choices caused a rift with his two sons, who visit yet challenge nearly all his beliefs, especially his views on the collapse of Yugoslavia. To them, he is an idealistic dreamer who put principles above family. His loyalty to a united, multiethnic Bosnia and rejection of nationalism led him to vote against the Dayton Agreement, making him a symbol to the left and a pariah to ruling structures. He knows he was right, yet lost his country, party, city, and his sons’ trust. Now he lives in self-imposed exile, trapped by memory and bitterness. WE SHALL LIVE TOGETHER asks: can a war ever truly end?
