MAMiTA focuses on mother-son relationships in Colombia and delivers insights of the social structures that shape these families and the (not always voluntarily gained) strength of the mothers. Beside the filmaker’s view, MAMiTA is also a cinematic exploration of what happens when protagonists are given access to the power of images and get to portray themselves in their own homes. We get to know different lifestyles and observe the interaction between mothers and their sons in the context of a particular field of tension: the image of women between the mother as "the saint" and the traditionally chauvinistic, male gaze. We observe the phenomenon of adolescent men between the ages of 20 and 30 not wanting to give up the emotional and spatial closeness to their unconditionally loving mothers. This often creates a conflict with their longing for autonomy and self-determination, but also makes them discover new concepts of their own idea of masculinity in the machismo culture.
