Shenzhen, New York. The 16th typhoon of the year is approaching the Chinese coast. In the sweltering night, two queer voices call out to one another from each of the cities. Slowly, the two metropolises, filmed on celluloid, overlap and merge. The two voices then fear another typhoon approaching, one that is even more threatening.
Shenzhen, New York. A weather report announces the approach of the 16th typhoon of the year towards the Chinese coast. In the sweltering night, two queer voices call out to one another from each of the cities. One has gone to visit her mother, who is hospitalised in China with respiratory problems. At the bedside, she experiences her own struggle in confiding her reality. On the other end of the phone, another typhoon is forming in New York, one that is even more threatening. The two cities, shot on film, begin to overlap and merge. Because of their dual status as queer and migrant, the two voices begin to fade. As a directive repeats “Stay Inside, Stay Alive,” a thermal camera captures bodies in motion in these two migrant-built metropolises, where environmental, emotional and political typhoons bring them together, crush them and then scatter them. A formally successful experiment, Your City is a genuine cry of protest against the erasure of our identities.
