Une chambre à elles

In 1929, Virginia Woolf wrote the feminist phenomenon, A Room of One's Own. This seminal text denounced the erasure of women from history and asserted the need for them to have a space of their own, to write as much as to exist. Lucia Martinez Garcia continues her legacy with the sublime Une chambre à elles. In the privacy of their rooms, Claude-Emmanuelle, Régina and Nicole put on their make-up while confiding in front of their mirrors. In this place that is both a refuge and a threshold, they candidly share their journeys, their vulnerabilities and their strengths, addressing mental health, the transition to adulthood and self-construction. An internal dialogue made possible by this protective space. The bedroom is both a confined space from which to confront the alienating outside world, and a mental space that maps the psyche of its protagonists in a play of mirrors and tender gazes. Enhanced by sublime lighting and colorimetry, the film integrates Woolf's idea into a powerful game of translation. The interior becomes a sounding board for thought, but also a place of connection between these heroines whose individual stories become collective. A powerful feminist evocation and a vibrant political manifesto that reminds us – as if we needed it – that so little has changed.
