The Making of the Lure

Here we follow the production of a film about debt, a Broadway-inspired political satire where the protagonist is a debt-crippled Pinocchio – crowned the king of debt – ready to do anything to stay in power. Wearing a Lehman Brothers cap, video artist Eva Barto, accompanied by her collaborators, calls microcredit banks, devises plans to find patrons and sets up hidden cameras to uncover the true nature of disguised pawn lending practices. Behind the veil of our financial systems lies a whole world of scams and legal loopholes – the kind that create bubbles ready to burst – that twist language and constrain the lives of those who have no say in creating the rules of the game. Through the search for funding for the film within the film, The Making of the Lure exposes the great fiction on which our economic system rests – that of an emancipatory lending system – showing how money can disappear and reappear in the hands of the wealthy, like the illusions of a magician paid to entertain us, before the astonished gaze of those who own nothing. The invention of a guerrilla-style cinema with an economic-political twist, that takes on the cynicism of capital through irony.
