A decade after Maidan, Loznitsa films the civilian population striving to live “normally” despite the Russian war of aggression. Filmed over a period of two years from Lviv to Odessa, via Kyiv and Dnipro, this new epic, a genuine archive for the future, paints a monumental portrait of a nation determined to defend its right to exist.
Sergei Loznitsa’s most recent feature-length documentary, The Invasion, opens as Maidan concluded – with a funeral procession. The civilians who fell under the bullets of Yanukovych’s pro-Russian regime have been replaced by soldiers defending their country against a war of aggression driven by an absurd rationale. Composed of long, static takes filmed over two years across the four corners of Ukraine, the film creates a vast fresco devoted to a civilian population striving to live a “normal” life under conditions that are anything but. The fluid editing arranges the sequences like a series of micro-fictions of reality, or assembles them according to recurring motifs following a subtle pendulum-like movement: while some bathe in the icy waters of a river for religious reasons, war amputees struggle to regain a semblance of mobility in the pool of a rehabilitation centre – just one example among a rich and abundant corpus. By recording the signs of war etched into his country’s landscape, the filmmaker further underscores the astonishing vitality of a people standing firm against their own annihilation.
