A film about concrete? Indeed, and a hilarious one at that... After attending a workshop on writing and selling a romantic movie for TV, John Wilson sets about applying the recipe – to a documentary about concrete. The History of Concrete transforms this most mundane material into a wild adventure, proving that no subject is too grey to be brilliant.
A simple “Hey” replaces the famous “Hey New York” from the HBO series that made his name. From the very first words – his voice, his pacing, his jokes – we immediately recognise the John Wilson we know and love. During his visit to Nyon in 2024, he barely dared to mention this first feature film project. We awaited it nervously. Now, we are not disappointed. During a professional lull, the filmmaker enrols in a Hallmark film-making workshop, creating original content known for its saccharine love stories. The workshop outlines the essential elements for success: don’t mention Jesus, never cut away from a kissing scene, shoot in beautiful settings… a formula that John Wilson decides to apply to the story of concrete. What might at first seem like a conceptual joke turns into a hilarious and surprisingly profound exploration of American life. Pavements, cracks, streets, stuck chewing gum – Wilson deploys his unique art of digression and boundless curiosity. A torrent of joy and intelligence.
