The Building Site

In the historic centre of Palermo, yet another Italian city ravaged by overtourism, two filmmakers document the liminal moment in the life of a noble palace falling into ruin, where they live along with other castaways of a city facing extinction, between the end of a glorious decline spanning centuries and the beginning of a treacherous rebirth. The building is filmed, from the communal areas to the more or less private ones, with the discerning eye of those who have observed and listened to it daily, learning its best traits and worst flaws, pondering what makes a place a home. Peering into the flats reveals stories worthy of their own films, but the doors discreetly close again, returning the building to its starring role. However, like a giant besieged by Lilliputians, the palazzo seems indifferent to the stories of its inhabitants, the rats and crabs in its recesses, the workers, estate agents, investors and tourist guides, and ultimately to the gaze of the audience too. Its time ticks differently. It shines in its decay, radiating the calm and style of centuries of history.
