Websites mimicking the appearance of journalistic media, but which mainly generate advertising revenue by disseminating disinformation, are spreading like wildfire online. In this 3D animated documentary, Spray and Pray plunges us into the dark side of the web, where the anti-LGBTQ+ political agenda serves the economic interests of an unscrupulous minority.
Making easy money through disinformation. Websites that imitate the appearance of
journalistic media, but which exist solely to generate advertising revenue by disseminating disinformation, are proliferating like mushrooms on the web. Sensational headlines (“Unseen gender orgies on US streets, children targeted”) capitalise on fear and anti-LGBT and anti-immigrant resentment, encouraging clicks and shares and generating income. Sensationalism without limits or safeguards – the higher the shock value, the more effective it is. A monetisation of fear that has real effects in marginalising vulnerable people, and contributes to the polarisation of social space while exploiting the gaps in our perceptions, hypnotised by algorithms. Built on extensive research, this film by artist Veneta Androva presents scripted interviews in 3D animations with some of the grifters. Fictional dialogues inspired by verified facts and journalistic investigations which, through their visualisation, question our strained ability to distinguish truth from falsehood.
