In a ruined virtual museum, a group of avatars – a security frog, a prowling velociraptor, a romantic penguin and some Kawaii TikTokers – offer a witty commentary on its works. Normal Planet marks the return of the filmmakers behind Knit's Island (VdR 2023), with a brilliant essay on the pantheonisation of art and the consumption of culture.
In a ruined museum, a vestige of a bygone world, a group of digital avatars are enjoying a tour; a security frog, a prowling velociraptor, a romantic penguin guide and a trio of manga Kawaii TikTok girls… These chimeras wander around the site, their commentary on the works they discover by turns witty and serious. Born from a series of real remarks recorded at the Fabre Museum in Montpellier, these voices are embodied in this liminal space through a digital double, often awkward, sometimes grotesque and delightfully offbeat. Normal Planet marks the return of the brilliant filmmaking trio Ekiem Barbier, Guilhem Causse and Quentin L'helgoualc'h, responsible for Knit’s Island, one of the most remarkable films of Visions du Réel 2023, that earned them the Burning Lights Prize. A quirky immersion which, beneath its surface, offers us a brilliant essay on the pantheonisation of art and our consumption of culture. Video games once again serve as a powerful narrative matrix for a new, more social space. A place conducive to creation, freedom and encounters.
