After envisioning a near future in which climate change disrupts lives and relationships in Don’t Let the Sun, Zünd seeks out that same dystopia in the real world, finding it in the Persian Gulf, where temperatures can exceed 50°C and society is divided between the privileged few who can protect themselves, and migrants who have no choice but to endure the heat in order to make ends meet.
After envisioning a near future in which climate change disrupts lives and relationships in Don't Let the Sun, her narrative feature debut from 2025, Zünd seeks out that same dystopia in the real world, finding it in the Persian Gulf, where temperatures can exceed 50°C and society is divided between the privileged few who can protect themselves, and migrants from the Global South who have no choice but to endure the heat in order to make ends meet. The definition of “colour temperature” has rarely made more sense than in this work, where the tonal depth, further enhanced by the immersive soundscape, appears to raise the thermometer reading in the room, in an interplay and mutual amplification between the projector's light beam and the merciless sunlight beating down on the streets and desert. Heat thus appears as a mirage in reverse: not a stretch of water on the horizon promising relief that vanishes as we approach it, but rather a hellish vision generated by climate change and the wildest fantasies of capitalism, which threatens to become increasingly real as we move into the future.
