Two decades in the making, Adam's Apple is the result of a unique familial and creative collaboration: director Amy Jenkins lovingly documented her son's gender transition and journey from a very young age through to college, while the film's protagonist, Adam, bravely shared his story with exceptional maturity and honesty, contributing his own footage and music to the project. With access to such an extensive archive, Jenkins could revisit those seemingly fleeting moments that prove pivotal, holding the secret of a life in the making: the choice of a carnival costume, an innocent game or remark. Little Audrey soon found the words to express themselves freely, to claim their gender and a new name, while also reassuring their mum, struggling with parental concerns over the medical aspects of transition, and confronting their equally caring but vulnerable ageing dad, clinging to deeper generational resistances. Adam's exhilarating and empowering journey towards manhood is universal: his spirit and determination should guide anyone searching for their true self, whatever their challenges.
