1+1+1

Starting from the premise that modern societies are driven by the progress and its frantic pursuit of the “new”, leading to the destruction of the “old” (before quickly becoming obsolete itself), Ondřej Vavrečka asks what should be preserved for the future and what should be consigned to the limbo of the past. Accompanied by a trio of sympathetic actors and a few sharp intellectual references (Michel Serres, etc.), the Czech filmmaker tackles this highly philosophical question on a cinematic stage that owes more to Jarry’s pataphysics than to Wittgenstein’s Tractatus. With joyful cunning – manipulating giant chips and other metaphorical dwarfs, harnessing documentary triviality to performances and absurd musical numbers – the editing progresses through free associations that serve to either displace the argument or anticipate its meaning. Through this approach, 1+1+1 integrates, in its very form, the principle of creative destruction, prompting us to reflect on the opposing and shadowy forces that drive us, between conservatism and progressivism.
