On the island of São Miguel, in the middle of the Atlantic, young Ana lives in an impoverished fishing community, ruled by its traditions and religion. With her friend Luís, she finds refuge in the island’s flourishing queer community. When Cloé arrives from Canada, Ana sets off on a journey that will take her beyond the horizon, into her deepest desires.
On the island of São Miguel, in the heart of the Azores archipelago adrift in the Atlantic, young Ana lives with her mother and two brothers. In her impoverished fishing village, bound tightly to tradition, she feels stifled. With her friend Luís, she catches her breath by exploring the island, drawn to the island’s vibrant and growing queer community. When Cloé returns from Canada for the holidays, Ana embarks on a journey that will carry her beyond the horizon — and deep into the stirrings of her own desire.
In her debut feature film, Cláudia Varejão delicately captures that liminal state of being, the hour entre chien et loup, as it flickers through the characters portrayed by Ana Cabral and Ruben Pimenta, two non-professional actors. She offers them space to write their desires freely, released from patriarchal constraints. Through painterly, unforgettable compositions, Ana and Luís undergo experiences that will change them forever, held within the embrace of a queer community and bathed in the indigo glow that settles over the island at dusk. With deep respect for the island’s inhabitants and their traditions, Varejão conjures a luminous work that invites reverie, open to all of life’s possibilities.
