Lumumba : La Mort du prophète

Patrice Lumumba was not yet 30 years old when he was propelled into international politics. An indigenous postal clerk in Stanleyville (now Kisangani), he would be reviled for his part in denouncing the subjugation of his people, subjected to whippings at the hands of the Belgian colonists. The short-lived Prime Minister of one of the richest countries in Africa, his fate was inescapable, his assassination planned. In the early 1990s, Raul Peck goes back in time. His camera drifts through the empty corridors of power in Brussels, like a ghost coming back to haunt the guilty conscience of the former colonial power’s anonymous nationals. The filmmaker calls the privileged witnesses who knew the Congolese leader to “the bar”, examining the discourse from the archives as a staged narrative controlled by the victors. His voiceover, overlaid with poetry and irony, meditates on the tragedy of this history, and summons the memories of a childhood which was also part Congolese. Lumumba: Death of a Prophet is a powerful, reflective documentary essay, setting personal memory within the framework of a historic event.
