At the end of 1930s, Ivan Besse, the projectionist of a small town in South Dakota, struck by how his fellow citi- zens appeared lost in the face of the Great Depression, decides to film them in the street before inviting them to a screening of the film. His aim: to save his movie theatre and, at the same time, strengthen the community. Today, two Spanish filmmakers return to the site of this event, find the film and some of the protagonists still alive. This little film is short and simple, but something funda- mental happens during its eleven minutes. A suspended re-evocation as well as a surprising archaeology of film open before the audience’s eyes. So, today as yesterday, it is the approach more than the beauty of the images filmed that is moving... What do we find in these black-and-white shots that time has giv- en back to us in their flagrancy? We find the principle of documentary filmmaking: knowing and recognising ourselves, us, human beings walking towards our end and our principle.
