Everlasting summer. Everlasting youth. The utopia of a new human being. Finnish mass tourism expanded in the park forest of Aulanko. In the same area a hotel opened its doors. It was built in a functionalist fashion and it quickly became the location of choice for the socialites of the time. In the summer of 1939, only a month before World War II erupted, a party arrived at the hotel. One of the members of the party was 19 years old up-and-coming actress Sirkka Sari. What happened to her? The mystery of her disappearance has haunted historians and gossip lovers. Conspiracy theories have been spun around her vanishing. But as the fact slowly sank into the national consciousness, Sirkka’s vanishing became the turning point where the country became all too aware of its weaknesses and of how dreams of youth had all but faded away. Only ghosts stayed behind roaming the highways. Jani Peltonen, director of The Tall Man, once again tackles the Suomi national identity crafting an architectural and lynchian nightmare that is a testimony of his unique talent as a filmmaker.
