“The film is about wondering why the world is the place it is”; that’s how Laila Pakalnina describes Hotel and a Ball, with usual poetry, humor and truth. Wondering why, for example, in simplicity often lies beauty, or why taking something too seriously might result ridiculous when playing can be the most important and serious thing to do. A masterful quiet dialogue of worlds and points of view.

“The film is about wondering why the world is the place it is”: that’s how Laila Pakalnina describes Hotel and a Ball, with her usual poetry, humour and truth.

Wondering why, for example, beauty often lies in spontaneity or why taking something too seriously might result in the ridiculous, when playing can be the most important and serious thing to do. From a hotel room we see a soccer field, sometimes we just hear a soccer field when the camera focuses on other activities that are going on around it. Then we enter the hotel, where we find people eating, cleaning, talking, in a radically different atmosphere. A masterful sunny dialogue of worlds and points of view: the point of view of a hotel and the one of a ball, peacefully waiting on the ground and observing. They both look at us.
