Karine is a French embalmer working in Italy. She goes about her daily routine with a calm and dispassionate approach. Dead bodies are the tools of her trade. Her job is to try and bring the bodies back to life one last time through make-up and tissue reconstruction. This is her own way of challenging death: outsmart it through beauty and severely-disciplined work ethic. Because Karine is a true professional. She is the best at what she does. Thus she becomes, maybe without even realizing it, involved in a quest for perfection: to keep up beauty while facing decay. Fearlessly gazing into the abyss, Karine is fully aware that, eventually, the abyss will gaze into her. Director Filippo Ticozzi observes Karine perform her highly skilled work as if she were the keeper of some of the last and carefully-guarded secret of a vanishing fine art. Like a knight errant who has to engage battle with a ruthless and merciless enemy, Karine uses her craft to protect the last moments of human dignity while never forgetting that oblivion is what ultimately awaits everyone.
