A Dutch monk, brother Hugo, wants to be a hermit. He seeks solitude in a little church in the remote countryside. The vast empty spaces seem favourable to his intentions, but the silence he needs to devote himself to the Word of God is broken by occasional visitors, wanting to know what the life of a hermit consists of. Sacred and profane meet at the threshold of the church! In a silence both complicit and detached, the camera observes with amusement, drawing a strange cartography of human and geographical space. Nothing surprising about this, as the filmmaker has devoted herself to studying human geography and, in her work, ascribes an essential value to place, perspective and silent watching. “The journey between ideals and daily practice is one we all make, endlessly back and forth. Wanting something contrary to our personality is after all a contradiction which makes us human” (MVDS).
