Dead Birds Flying High

350 stuffed and dusty birds. Caterpillars, bugs and butterflies, pinned in boxes. The collection is beautiful but a little bit uncanny. Sönje Storm explores the life of eccentric farmer and photographer Jürgen F. Mahrt (1882-1940), her greatgrandfather, who after WW1 started to observe the early stages of loss of biodiversity. He photographed birds and butterflies in his home region, observed and described the extinction of their habitats und sensed the beginning of an ecological crisis as early as 1919.
