Meir & Me – 50 Pieces

1995 – A car bomb is detonated in Kfar Darom. Meir is stuck there. Suffers PTSD. Haunted. Can't get the smells, the noises and the scattered body parts out of his mind. The guilt plagues him and will not let go. During the day, he clings to normalcy, tries to find solace by searching for tree stumps he can shred and sculpt into human organs and animal parts. At night, he fights off insomnia, and searches for the woman who would dare live with him. Meir conjures up difficult experiences I had repressed from my own service in the Air Force helicopter squadron. The worst of them was the helicopter crash in Romania during a training session I commanded, in which I lost friends and subordinates. In our shared struggle with the ghosts that haunt us, we are on a joint journey, hoping to find consolation for our souls. I have cinema; Meir has sculptures and poems. Our intimate friendship is priceless. We may not find the peacefulness we so desire, but together we are a little bit less lonely.
