The portrait, whether individual or choral, is one of the preferred modalities of art history. It also runs through the history of documentary cinema, from Robert Flaherty to Gianfranco Rosi, Shirley Clarke to Laura Poitras. Portraying someone with a lens implies filming characters in motion and through time. In the course of this process, how does the gaze of the filmmaker evolve? In what way do documentary portraits necessarily go beyond the strict recording of reality?
Invited filmmakers (yet to be confirmed): Khoa Lê - Má Sái Gon (Burning Lights Competition); Guillaume Brac - Un Pincement au cœur (International Medium Length & Short Film Competition); Ekiem Barbier - Knit's Island (Burning Lights Competition); Justine Harbonnier (Burning Lights Competition); Alberto Martín Menacho - Antier Noche (International Feature Film Competition).
