Who killed Atzin Molina Salinas? No one knows if she really is dead, but Manuel Bayo Gisbert is searching an empty house for traces of his former classmate. During a night-time wander, that is as sensorial as it is frightening, he evokes his mysterious disappearance in 2019 and contrasts it with the Totonaque rain god of the same name.
One night in 2019, Atzin Molina Salinas was seen leaving a nightclub. Since then, her loved ones have had no word from her. Burdened with guilt, the filmmaker retraces the steps of his missing former high school friend. In an abandoned house, he searches for signs of her presence while examining his own responsibility in this tragedy. In Vera Cruz, the Totonac water deity whose name closely resembles that of the young woman – Atzini – is also missing. Hydrocarbon pollution has dried up the region, and water diviners struggle to find the trickle that could be used to re-nourish the land. From these two absent portraits emerges the violence of men, as well as the sorrow that expands outwards from it. A Totonac legend explains the phenomenon of rain as the tears of the god Atzini – but we also sense the tears of the powerless filmmaker leaking into the shots of the downpours.
