Following the death of her parents, Alice Diop immerses herself for a month in the environment where her mother grew up, in Dakar. She depicts the courtyard of the family home and the different generations of women who live there, recording their confidences, their dreams and their struggles. As the daughter of exiles, the filmmaker takes a tender yet distant look at a life that could have been her own.

The daily life of Alice Diop's Senegalese family revolves around their courtyard: it is where aunts and cousins cook, engage in activities to make ends meet, share confidences and everyday struggles. After her mother's death, the filmmaker - who had never lived in her parents' homeland - spent a month there, capturing a piece of that existence and imagining what her life might have been like in this parallel world. With a gaze that is at once tender and distant, she considers these different generations of women: those who inhabit the courtyard, those who left, or those who dream of doing so. Les Sénégalaises et la Sénégauloise sensitively captures, in the form of a huis clos, moments of mischievous complicity and quiet conversation, as well as the bustle of the surprisingly familiar surroundings.
