In late 2023, Palestinian-director Rashid Masharawi worked to get twenty cameras to filmmakers living throughout the Gaza strip. The goal? To provide an opportunity for Gazans to capture their own experiences cinematically, preserve their memory and maintain their desire to create in a context when owning their own stories is harder than ever. The result is The Ground Zero Project, a series of micro-films designed to give another kind of perspective of the war, in Gaza - one that harbors artistic talents and promotes creativity, even in the most difficult circumstances.
In this panel, Rashid Masharawi joins Tunisian-producer and Visions du Réel 2024 jury member Dora Bouchoucha and Swiss producer Nicolas Wadimoff (Akka Films) to discuss the genesis of the project, the challenges their filmmakers are facing, and what role creative cinema can play in the lives of those in war.
Moderated by Jasmin Basic, member of the VdR–Industry selection committee.
